By the time I returned on Saturday night it had been well and truly broken in and Bonus Boy was addicted! He even went so far as to write me a begging message, all correctly spelled and without any help from his siblings. Lego has brought many things to this house throughout the years in all its guises and now it has brought him a reason to write!He loves it because it’s funny, he can play it on his own, it is full of superheroes (There is even Wonderwoman, I WAS Wonder Woman as a child! I made myself gold cuffs and twirled around on the front lawn, batting off bullets and pulling my moves, I was invincible! – or mad) and it’s LEGO on screen! All the little Lego people he busily creates worlds with in his bedroom are real up there on screen and it has given him a huge amount of fodder for new adventures. This is why I like it!Briefly, in Mum speak, Batman and Robin return in this sequel to the best selling LEGO video game of all time. They team up with other fabulous superheroes including Superman, Wonder Woman (me), Supergirl and Green Lantern to stop those awful baddies Lex Luthor and The Joker from destroying Gotham City. For the first time in a LEGO videogame there are talking LEGO minifigures which makes me grin!Lego games have been around for a while, and of late the formula has become rather stale. Pleasingly this new iteration breathes fresh life into the series renowned for its tongue in cheek humour and accessible, collect everything gameplay. Lego Batman 2 follows an original story including numerous characters from the DC Comics’ universe, from the titular Batman and his nemesis the Joker to Superman and the Justice League. A first for the Lego games is the inclusion of voice acting, which really adds to the feel of the game, enhancing the cheeky Lego humour. The relationship between the brooding, moody Batman and the enthusiastic Superman is nothing short of hilarious.The basic format is similar to previous Lego games. You play through levels with two characters, one of which can be controlled by a second player (so you can play with your child, or more likely so your child will be able to play with you). The aims of each level are varied; within the first few levels you have to beat up Lego versions of the Joker’s cronies (who upon death fly apart into their Lego components), fix a helicopter and take part in an intense vehicle chase. Previous Lego games have all featured a hub world, but this one is more ambitious, providing the player with a large open world to roam packed with secrets and treasures that require you to take advantage of the different heroes’ unique powers.Needless to say Lego Batman 2 embodies the previous Lego games’ family friendly philosophy, and goes above and beyond what we have seen previously in this franchise.
